Description
Need Buffer Solution pH 7?
What are Buffer Solutions?
Buffer solutions are solutions containing a weak acid and strong conjugated based or vice-versa. These solutions are very resilient to pH changes and, within a certain range, maintain the same values even if large amounts of acid or bases are added. Buffer solutions are typically used in situations where it’s vital to keep a stable pH, such as chemical and biological applications.
How do Buffer Solutions Work?
Buffer solutions resist pH changes due to the equilibrium established between the acid and its conjugated base. If an acid is added to the mixture, the equilibrium shifts towards the formation of more acid. As a result, the increases in H are minimal and do not change pH.
Similarly, a base added to the solution only reduces the concentration of H in very small amounts, not enough to change pH.
However, buffer solutions only work over a short pH range. Once the acid is more than 95% deprotonated, the ability to buffer pH changes is lost and the pH will change rapidly when an acid or base are added.
