Is Methylene Chloride Toxic?
This compound is considered the least toxic of the simple chlorohydrocarbons, but safety procedures must still be followed when handling. Its high volatility is perhaps the most dangerous aspect, making it an acute inhalation hazard if used in confined spaces without the appropriate breathing apparatus. In this situation, it can also be absorbed through the skin after prolonged exposures.
Several laboratory studies have shown that methylene chloride increases the risk of cancer in animals, including liver, lung and pancreas cancer, but human studies are not so conclusive and researchers have so far been unable to determine what level it may become carcinogenic.
All products containing methylene chloride must be clearly labelled, and since 2010, its use is restricted to professionals only. After a few fatal accidents, the EU decided only trained staff in industrial applications would be allowed to use this chemical.
Symptoms of Exposure to Methylene Chloride
Symptoms of exposure include:
Dizziness and difficulty concentrating
Headaches and Fatigue
Irritation of the respiratory tract, which may lead to suffocation
Irritation of the eyes
Loss of consciousness
Coma and death if not treated promptly
Skin irritation and chemical burns after prolonged skin contact
Potentially it may cause carbon monoxide poisoning (methylene chloride is metabolised to CO in the body)
May cause cardiovascular problems in people with pre-existing conditions
All our products come with 100% quality guarantee and are usually shipped within 24 hours after purchase. In addition to methylene chloride, we offer a wide range of products, from test kits and pharmaceutical chemicals to speciality products and bespoke solutions.

ReAgent is one of the leading chemical suppliers in the UK. With an impressive catalogue of accreditations, we have been providing top quality methylene chloride to businesses for over 40 years.
Commonly referred to as dichloromethane, methylene chloride is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH2Cl2. It is a colourless, volatile liquid with a sweet aroma. However, methylene chloride is very toxic and should be handled with care. Please refer to our MSDS page for more information.
Methylene chloride is available in three standards:
General use, or technical grade: this is our most popular grade of methylene chloride. Its high quality formula is recommended when certified specification is not a requirement.
Laboratory use: sometimes known as methylene chloride LRG, this grade is supply tested and certified to LRG standards.
Analytical use: this grade of methylene chloride meets the stringent requirements of AR standards. It is the highest quality of testing and certification offered on methylene chloride.
All of our methylene chloride products are available to buy in 2.5L, 25L and 200L with the option of bulk orders. We also offer price breaks for multiple purchases.
Uses of Methylene Chloride
This chemical is widely used as a solvent in many industrial processes. Methylene chloride is also an effective paint stripper and degreaser, and used to be the preferred chemical for decaffeinating tea and coffee. The food industry also utilises methylene chloride to prepare extracts of various flavourings.
Another common application of methylene chloride is as an aerosol spray propellant. It is present in most spray paint or aerosol cans, and is also used as a blowing agent for polyurethane foams. Methylene chloride can be toxic if inhaled chronically. If used in this way, it is important to ensure the area is well ventilated and that you always wear a protective mask.
