About PPE

PPE, or personal protection equipment, varies based on the hazards against which it is intended to serve as protection. Generally, PPE items include protective gear that shields different parts of the body from harm, from head to feet. Some of the most common PPE items are the following:

  • Helmet/hard hat
  • Face shields
  • Goggles
  • Earplugs or earmuffs
  • Breathing mask or gas mask
  • Gloves, gauntlets
  • Aprons, overalls, hazmat suits
  • Safety boots

Medical PPE has higher standards and is typically disposable, one-time-use to ensure safety. Work-specific hazards that require the wearing of PPE at work, especially during critical tasks, include:

  • Construction
  • Fire fighting
  • Bomb disposal
  • Chemical
  • Biohazard
  • Radioactive
  • Search and rescue
  • Spillage clean-up

In terms of regulations and standards, different countries, territories, and regions typically have their own specific regulations. Some of these regulations are very similar and overlap but some are country-specific. There are cases where local regulations are not as high as international standards.

Why is PPE important when handling chemicals?

Many industrial chemicals like acids are very hazardous. You will need special protection against chemicals that are volatile, flammable, corrosive, and toxic. These chemicals should be handled with care in terms of manufacture, storage, and transportation. Machines and robots can be used but sometimes human operators and quality checkers are necessary to be on-site.

Some of the common PPE used for handling hazardous chemicals include the following:

  • Respirators
  • Protective gloves
  • Protective clothing
  • Protective footwear
  • Eye protection

Here are examples of gloves that are appropriate for handling hazardous chemicals:

  • Latex – good for handling water-based and biological materials but not good for organic solvents
  • Nitrile – can be used for handling organic solvents, oils, acids, and bases
  • Butyl rubber – use this for handling esters and ketones but not for hydrocarbons
  • Neoprene – good for most hazardous chemicals like acids, bases, alcohols, peroxides, hydrocarbons, and phenols. It is not good for aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Norfoil –  excellent for handling most of hazardous chemicals but it has a poor fit,
  • Viton – you can use this for handling chlorinated and aromatic solvents but it is expensive and not suitable for ketones.

What is immersion oil?

In light microscopy, a technique known as oil immersion is used to increase the capacity of light microscopes to show smaller details of the specimen. This technique requires immersing the specimen and the objective lens into an “immersion oil.”

Specific optical and viscosity characteristics are needed for an oil to be used in microscopy. Optimal resolution is achieved when either the objective lens or the condenser lens is immersed in oil. Cedar tree oil was commonly used as immersion oil in the 1940s before synthetic immersion oils were invented.

Today, synthetic immersion oils are classified based on viscosity and the purpose. For instance, type F immersion oils are best for fluorescent microscopy.
