What is Mono Ethylene Glycol?

Monoethylene glycol, simply known as ethylene glycol, is an important raw material used in many different industrial applications. Ethylene Glycol is produced from ethylene according to the following equation:

C2H4O + H2O †’ HO€“CH2CH2€“OH

The product is completely odourless so does not give off any chemical smell when it is used in applications.

It is a vital component for making fabrics, such as polyester film, and is also used for engine coolants. Most notably, ethylene glycol is used as an antifreeze product for both cars and aircraft due to its freezing point of -45 oC.

Monoethylene is a colourless mildly viscous liquid that can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. It has a sweet taste and as such could be mistakenly ingested. Keep out of reach of children.

What is Ethylene Glycol Used For?

Monoethylene Glycol is used in industries all over the world. First synthesised in World War 1, it is used in:

  • The fabrics industry for making polyester clothing
  • The manufacture of resin, especially in plastics. Many everyday items are made from monoethylene glycol e.g. plastic drinks bottles, Tupperware and film
  • Antifreeze and de-icing products due to its low freezing point. Propylene glycol is now a common non-toxic alternative to ethylene glycol in antifreeze

Monoethylene glycol is also a vital component in engine coolant as not only does it have a low freezing point, it also has a higher boiling point than water. This means that it will stop your engine boiling over and, therefore, reduces any damage to the engine caused by overheating.
