Description
Need Nitric Acid for Analytical Use?
- We supply nitric acid for analytical use in 2.5L containers, with discounts available for bulk orders
- This product is sold as a 69-71% solution, with minimum levels of impurities in concentrations less than 0.5 ppm chloride, 2 ppm sulphate, 0.1 ppm lead; 0.01 ppm arsenic, 1 ppm iron and 0.001% non-volatile matter
- We also offer many other options with all our products, including customised labelling and specific pack sizes
How Can Nitric Acid be Synthesised in the Lab?
Industrially, nitric acid is synthesised by the reaction between nitrogen dioxide and water. However there are other ways this compound can be synthesised, but these are typically restricted to a lab as they’re not commercially viable.
Thermal Decomposition of Copper (II) Nitrate
This reaction produces nitrogen dioxide and oxygen, which are subsequently passed through water to generate nitric acid:
2 Cu(NO3)2 → 2 CuO (s) 4 NO2 (g) O2 (g)
The Reaction Between Nitrate Salt and Sulphuric Acid
Nitric acid can also be synthesised via a reaction between any nitrate salt (for example, sodium nitrate) and a strong solution of sulphuric acid (over 96%), followed by distillation at 83°C (nitric acid boiling point). All non-volatile matter (mostly metal sulphate) remains in the distillation container:
2 NaNO3 H2SO4 → 2 HNO3 Na2SO4
Obtaining Pure Solutions
Typically solutions go up to 68% acid, which is the maximum possible azeotrope with 32% water. However, for specialised applications, it’s possible to increase the concentration via distillation using magnesium nitrate or sulphuric acid as dehydrating agents.
It’s important to conduct this procedure in all-glass equipment and at low pressure to limit decomposition of nitric acid.
