How is Sodium Thiosulphate Used for Gold Extraction?
This compound can be seen as an alternative to cyanide during the extraction of gold. The main advantage over other methods is that not only it forms a non-toxic compound with gold, but it can also be used in certain types of gold ores which are refractory to cyanidation. These include for example Carlin-type or carbonaceous ores. However, it forms such as strong complex with gold, that it makes it extremely difficult to recover the gold after extraction. The problem is that these sodium thiosulphate-gold complexes do not adsorb to activated carbon, which is the standard method of separation after cyanidation. In addition, the method also uses large amounts of sodium thiosulphate, considerably increasing the costs associated with gold extraction.
How is Sodium Thiosulphate Used in Photography?
This compound is commonly used in photography to dissolve silver halides, typical ingredients used to develop photographs.
2 S2O32− AgBr → [Ag(S2O3)2]
As a photographic fixer, sodium thiosulphate can be applied to both film and photographic paper, earning this compound the nickname “hypo” among photograph enthusiasts after its original name hyposulphite of soda.
