What is Titanium Dioxide?

Also known as titanium (IV) oxide, this compound is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium with the chemical formula TiO2. It appears as a white powder and is used in two-thirds of all pigments in the world.

This compound is found in the minerals rutile, anatase and brookite. Mainly sourced from Ilmenite ore, the ore is mixed with sulphuric acid which removes the iron oxide from Ilmenite.

Titanium dioxide is used in many day-to-day applications. It is even used in food colouring and has the E Number E171. However, it is classed as a potential carcinogen if its dust is inhaled, so caution should always be taken when handling this chemical.
